Mastigoteuthis agassizii Verrill, 1881

Mantle length up to 120 mm. This is a meso-bathypelagic species distributed in the Atlantic from about 30º N to 50 º N, and possibly to the south from 30º N down to equatorial area. Very little is known about biology and ecology of this species, so despite its rare caught, it is very important food source for toothed whales. 1 specimen was captured in the southern Denmark Strait during BIOICE project, 1 more in 2015 (both about 65.0 º N), suggesting its real range in the North Atlantic is up to the Denmark Strait and the Davis Strat and Faroe-Shetland Ridge northwards.
